Very interesting question you have posted here.
Personally, I think that self-directed learning does not have to stimulate critical thinking at all. For example, if someone tends to use materials that are exclusively dedicated to one ideology and does not contain any other political views, a person could decide that it is the only right perspective that exists and does not critically reflect on it.
The other thing is - will there be enough different resources that a person could use? How a person gets suggestions on what types of online material should he/she use or how he/she found about those? Can we assume then that insufficient various types of educational material could direct one's perception of some issue?
